Lo statistico e matematico americano John Wilder Tukey pubblica il 9 gennaio 1958 l’articolo “The Teaching of Concrete Mathematics” sulla rivista “American Mathematical Monthly”. Questo appare il primo riferimento scritto all’uso del termine “software” per riferirsi ai programmi per computer.
Scrive Tukey: “Today the ‘software’ comprising the carefully planned interpretive routines, compilers, and other aspects of automative programming are at least as important to the modern electronic calculator as its ‘hardware’ of tubes, transistors, wires, tapes and the like”
Oggi il ‘software, comprese le routine interpretative attentamente pianificate, i compilatori, e gli altri aspetti della programmazione automatica, sono perlomeno altrettanto importanti per i moderni calcolatori elettronici quanto il loro ‘hardware’ di valvole, transistor, cavi, nastri e simili).
